Kiribati will challenge your view of how life should be and show you a less complicated way of living where family and community come first.
Situated in the equatorial pacific, in the east Kiribati offers world class fishing (both game and bone fishing) from Kiritimati Island. In the west is the Gilbert Group of islands, which offer amazing and unique cultural experiences. The country’s capital of Tarawa has historic sites and artefacts where one of the bloodiest battles of World War II , the Battle of Tarawa.
If you are visiting as part of your work, we would encourage you to explore Kiribati to experience these delights – South Tarawa should not be the only Atoll you visit when you have 33 to choose from, even the nearby North Tarawa offers a very different perspective!
There are many adventures to be had on and around the islands that make up the nation of Kiribati. In a nation with the biggest water to land ratio in the world, water is a dominant feature in the lives of the I-Kiribati, and for all visitors.
Fishing is world class – centred on Kiritimati (Christmas) Island, one of the few places in the world you can saltwater fly fish, for the mighty fighting bone fish! The deeper waters around Kiritimati and the Gilbert Islands are also great places for record breaking game fishing.
For those looking for some culture, there is plenty to see and do around the island. Culture in Kiribati is still very uncommodified – the best way to experience a relatively untouched culture is to take a domestic flight or ferry across to an outer island and meet the ever friendly local people. If you come at the right time of year you may also be able to witness local celebrations, in religious holidays such as Easter or Christmas; or national celebrations such as Kiribati Independence. If you would like to take a bit the culture home with you, there amazing handicrafts for sale, still made the traditional way.
The Gilbert group of islands host a number of World War II historical sites. Tarawa, Makin (now called Butaritari), Abemama (also the ocean island of Banaba) were invaded by the Japanese in 1941, just after they bombed Pearl Harbour. After the Japanese fortified the atolls, In 1942 and 1943 US Marines conducted a number of large scale raids to remove the Japanese presence. Today, relics of the battles and forts can be visited.
Kiribati is also host to the Phoenix group of islands – including the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA), the world’s largest marine protected area. For bird lovers, this area hosts nesting and feeding grounds for 19 species of wild sea birds. For those that like it underwater, a vast playground hosting a rich diversity of fish (509 identified species) and other marine life (mammals, sharks, invertebrates, plant life) in plentiful numbers in windward, leeward and lagoon habitats.
If you like it on top of the water, there is amazing surf breaks off Fanning island.

Fakarava
Today is yours to unwind and soak in the beauty of this stunning atoll, surrounded by some of the most peaceful scenery in the world.
Fakarava, Havaiki-te-araro, Havai'i or Farea is an atoll in the west of the Tuamotu group in French Polynesia. It is the second largest of the Tuamotu atolls. The nearest land is Toau, a coral atoll which lies 14 kilometres (8.7 miles) to the northwest.
The atoll is roughly rectangular, and its length is 60 kilometres (37 miles) and its width is 21 kilometres (13 miles). Fakarava has a wide and deep lagoon with a surface of 1,112 square kilometres (429 square miles) and two passes. The main pass to enter the lagoon, located in its north-western end, is known as Passe Garuae and it is the largest pass in French Polynesia; the southern pass is called Tumakohua. It has a land area of 24.1 square kilometres (9 square miles). Fakarava has 837 inhabitants; the main village is called Rotoava.
Although seemingly untouched, Fakarava was once the active capital of the Tuamotu Atolls. You can explore the village of Tetamanu at the far southern end of the lagoon and find a lovely vintage Catholic Church built entirely out of coral by early European missionaries. You can also take a leisurely bike ride to Rotoava, now the administrative center, and see the Topaka Lighthouse, a stone structure shaped like a pyramid that stands 45 feet (14 meters) high.
The main village of Rotoava is located on the longest continuous motu (islet) in French Polynesia. This skinny strip of land encloses the northern and eastern side of the lagoon and is rimmed with extraordinarily beautiful beaches. Life along these quiet shores is especially unique. Leisurely activities include nothing more than fishing and snorkeling during morning or afternoon lagoon excursions.

This isn’t only some stroll; it is almost a deeply touching exploration into what really shapes Nuku Hiva’s amazing personality, still. As I was saying, picture yourself going down into the verdant valleys. Imagine this: there are impressive rock formations and the sounds of interesting wildlife too. So, that pretty much sums up my day with Ana and Tangy as the friendly local experts that exposed something totally cool to all of us. So, let’s check all there is!
